Choosing A Video Production Company In Pune: 9 Questions To Ask
Nine questions worth asking on the first call. The answers tell you more than any showreel, because a showreel only shows the projects that went well.
A showreel tells you what a studio can do on its best project with its best client. It does not tell you what happens in week three when a stakeholder changes their mind, and that is the part that decides whether you enjoy the project.
These are the nine questions we would ask if we were hiring a production company in Pune, including the ones that are uncomfortable to answer.
The Nine Questions
Who is actually on this project?
Studios pitch with senior people and deliver with junior ones. That is not automatically wrong, but you should know which names will be in the edit and on set before you sign.
What is in the quote, and what is a change order?
Specifically: extra aspect ratios, extra durations, subtitles, a third revision round, extended usage. Get the boundary in writing.
How many revision rounds, and what counts as one?
Two rounds is standard. What matters is the definition. A round where three stakeholders send conflicting notes separately is really three rounds.
What happens if we miss an approval date?
Most delays on most projects are client-side. A studio with a clear, unembarrassed answer to this has run enough projects to have needed one.
Can I see a project that went wrong?
The most useful question on this list. Every studio has one. A studio that says no has either not been doing this long or is not going to be straight with you when yours goes sideways.
Who owns the footage and the project files?
The final film is obvious. Raw footage and project files are not, and they are what you need if you ever want to recut in-house or move studios.
What are you measuring after delivery?
If the answer is views, they are measuring the thing that goes up on its own. Ask what they track and what they would do if it underperformed.
What does the shoot actually need from us?
Location access, people's time, product samples, legal approval windows. The client-side cost of a shoot is real and rarely quoted.
What would you talk us out of?
A studio that never pushes back is selling hours. Ask directly and listen for whether they have an opinion about your brief.
What A Pune Shoot Actually Involves
Some things are specific to shooting here and are worth planning around rather than discovering.
- Traffic is a production variable. Crew and kit moving across the city in the morning peak can cost you two hours of a shoot day. Consolidating locations by geography, not by convenience, is a real saving.
- Monsoon affects exteriors between roughly June and September. Any outdoor sequence in that window needs a contingency day or a covered alternative in the plan.
- Permissions take longer than people expect for public spaces, malls and some office buildings. Two weeks is a safer assumption than a few days.
- Power and sound in older buildings are the two most common on-the-day surprises. A recce is not a formality.
What You Should Do Before The First Call
Three things, and together they take about an hour. They will save you a fortnight.
Write the objective down in one sentence
Not the format, the outcome. "Get mid-market prospects to book a demo" is an objective. "A two minute brand film" is a format, and choosing the format before the objective is how a company ends up with a beautiful video that nobody can point at a result from.
Find out who has to approve it
Ask inside your own organisation before you ask outside it. The number of approvers is the single best predictor of how long the project will take, and it is knowable on day one.
Decide a budget range you can actually defend
Not a number you hope to hear. A range you could take to finance. Studios quote to the brief they are given, and a brief with no budget produces a proposal aimed at the wrong film.
How To Compare Two Quotes
Line them up on five things: shoot days, deliverable count including ratios and durations, revision rounds, usage term and territory, and delivery date. Two quotes that differ by three times almost always differ on at least two of those.
There is a full breakdown of the bands and what moves them in what corporate video production actually costs in India.
Local Or Remote?
This comes up constantly and the answer splits cleanly by whether a camera is involved.
For anything with a physical shoot, hire locally. Recces, permissions, crew availability and equipment hire are all local problems, and a studio that has shot in your building or one like it will spot in an hour what a remote team discovers on the day. The saving from hiring elsewhere is usually erased by one lost half-day.
For animation, AI production, post and design, location matters very little. We work with teams in other cities and other countries on that work as a matter of course, and the only real requirement is agreeing review times that suit both calendars rather than assuming them.
The hybrid that works well is a local studio for production and a documented handover so your own team can run the cadence between projects. We cover when that makes sense in in-house team or agency.
We are based in Pune and we work remotely with teams elsewhere. Fixed scope, fixed timelines, and the retention numbers afterwards.
Talk To UsCommon questions
- How do I choose a video production company in Pune?
- Ask the nine questions above. The most revealing are the ones about a project that went wrong and what they would talk you out of, because both require a straight answer that a showreel cannot give.
- Should I hire locally or remotely?
- Hire locally where a physical shoot is involved, because recces, permissions and crew logistics are local problems. For animation, AI production and post, location matters much less.
- How far ahead should I book a shoot?
- Three to four weeks is comfortable for a single-day corporate shoot, longer if permissions or talent are involved.
